Bentson's record questioned
Gay & Lesbian VOICE/88, a coalition of national lesbian and gay political and rights groups, issued a statement after the Atlanta Democratic Convention expressing concern over Michael Dukakis' selection of Texas Senator, Lloyd Bentsen, as his running mate. The activists expressed great concern over Bentsen's voting record for issues such as restrictions on AIDS educational materials targeted for the gay community, mandatory testing of VA hospital patients, immigrants, sex

Kellogg's "Nut & Honey" offensive
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has contacted the advertising departments at NBC, ABC and CBS, asking them to pull Kellogg's offensive ad for Nut & Honey Crunch cereal. The ad, in which a group of cowboys pull their guns on a wagon train cook who they think has called them "honey," is widely regarded as condoning anti-Gay violence. So far, NBC has agreed to meet with GLAAD next week to talk about the problem.
GLAAD brought the ad to the public's attention on its national radio program, Naming Names, in November of last year and again in March of this year. Another organization, the Coalition Against Media/Marketing Prejudice in Chicago, met with Kellogg executives and organized protests at Kellogg's corporate offices in Michigan. "Initially Kellogg seemed somewhat receptive to CAMMP's efforts," says GLAAD media committee chair Stephen Miller, "but now the company has turned intransigent and, we understand, has cut off communication with CAAMP. It was time to take the problem directly to the networks and,
as a New York based group, we were in a good position to do that."
Reportedly, the company pulled the ad for review at one point in response to viewer complaints, but decided it was not offensive or dangerous. Kellogg's has argued that the cowboys pull their guns because there is "nuttin" for breakfast rather than because they think they have been called honey. "That's ludicrous," says Miller. "The honey pun is used a number of times throughout the ad."
Last week, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force released a study showing that reported incidents of anti-Gay violence increased 42% from 1986 to 1987. The study singles out Kellogg's commercial for trivializing. legitimizing and encouraging anti-Gay violence. According to GLAAD executive director Craig Davidson, "The NGLTF study and the brutal attack on two Gay men in Central Park earlier this week underscore the danger of the Nut & Honey ad's message that any hint of affection between people of the same sex can appropriately be responded to with lethal violence."
NYNEX refuses listings
Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. has filed a discrimination complaint against NYNEX, the telephone company serving New York State and New England, for refusing a request to establish "Gay a and Lesbian Organizations" listing in the New York City Yellow Pages.
The suit, filed on behalf of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center, Heritage of Pride, and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), all located in New York City, alleges that the refusal violates the New York City ordinance that prohibits discrimination in public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation.
The three groups as well as others tried repeatedly for more than one year to obtain a heading that would fully identify their services to the public. Congressman Ted Weiss (DL New York) also wrote to NYNEX on two occasions to ask that it honor the requests. NYNEX refused.
According to Karin Schwartz who made the initial request on behalf of Heritage of Pride, the organization that organizes New York City's annual Gay Pride Week and March, NYNEX originally offered to add "Gay Groups to two existing categories: "Escort Services" and "Nightclubs." Since then, the corporation has taken the position that the groups would be sufficiently accommodated with listings under "Human Services" or "Social Services
